Letter From AWC President
Happy holidays to all of you! Let us celebrate!
Even though daylight hours are shorter now, our holidays are well timed during these darkest hours of the year. Our celebrations together help boost our spirits when we need it the most.
Our world is changing very quickly. We now want to spend more time with loved ones than ever before. As creatives, we have learned many new ways to connect with each other. Enjoy the happiest moments together in this new world. Embrace the good things---they may soon be tomorrow's cherished traditions.
May love and joy come to you!

Artist's Statement:
Consider a black square, truth is, the black square is simply an image of everything in the world in the dark... therefore, regardless of subject all that really matters is light. My goal is to paint light, pure and simple.

Thank You Laurin McCraken
Even though you did not give us a painting demonstration on November 10, we really enjoyed learning from your 20 years of painting experience. Your knowledge of tools and paints helped us understand more about the techniques and joy of painting.
You showed us the famous Kolinsky brush, and how its unique qualities enable it to hold water for long periods. Then there was one of the many helpful hints about paints! We will always start our painting day by squirting a small amount of WARM WATER into each container of paint on our palette. Who knew?

|
|
|
|
I am a passionate painter who believes that time spent painting is precious. My goal is to draw and paint every day and I believe that the fastest way to artistic growth is through the activity of painting.
|
|
Thank You Mick McAndrews
A Huge Thank You to Mick McAndrews for his delightful workshop on November 15th & 16th--- “Taking the Fear out of Watercolor Painting.”
As usual, Mick was engaging and created a very comfortable atmosphere for learning and painting. Many beautiful paintings came out of this two-day workshop which I hope to share in the future, with the participants’ approval. – Juanita Green
.(Contnued) My nature is to be spontaneous, so working loose and impressionistically appeals to me. The magic of watercolor is found in the partnership between artist and medium, of finding a balance between the knowledge, technique and skill of the painter while leaving room for the magic that makes watercolor so distinctive. - Mick McAndrews

EXHIBITS
Our annual exhibit at Ginger Cove is nearing an end -- on December 2. It has been a successful show, with six sales and, as always, well received by the residents. Pick up of unsold paintings will be on December 3, from 9:00 to 11:00 in the Ginger Cove gallery.
As of this writing, we have two exhibits planned for 2022, Quiet Waters in March and Wimsey Cove in September. In addition, we can expect to return to Ginger Cove in the winter.
Though March seems to be months away, it’s not too soon to start planning for our Quiet Waters exhibit. This will be a major exhibit, in both the Garden and Willow Galleries in the Visitors’ Center. We’ll probably be able to exhibit at least three (possibly four) paintings per artist as well as several matted paintings or giclée reproductions in the bins. There is a 25% commission and there will be a reception. It’s also an exhibit that will require a lot of volunteer help, so I hope several of you will step forward to assist with one task or another, so no one person will be overburdened. There will be volunteer opportunities before, during, after the exhibit and especially during the reception and on receiving and pick up days.
My warmest wishes for a happy and peace filled holiday season and a creative winter.
Joan Machinchick, Exhibits Chair

MONTHLY FEATURED ARTIST
NEW monthly article by Newsletter Editor, Connie Robinson
We currently have over 177 members in our club, and not everyone knows each other. Because we have been Zooming during our monthly meetings, we can see faces and names on our computer screens; but, have not been able to converse with other. Hopefully, we will some day meet in person again in Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. There are members from out of state that still need an introduction. For future articles, please send me an email with a nomination for another artist: constancejr@comcast.net

This month I want to introduce Maria Sola. Here is her background, in her words:
I'm a retired NY architect, living in DC, since spring of 2018. I grew up in Caracas, Venezuela, surrounded by my mother's paintings, and engineering drawings by my father, and two of my three brothers. I married an American and moved to NY in 1975. I have been taking Watercolors courses with David R. Daniels in the Smithsonian and Zoom, since we retired and moved to DC to present.
I also have taken two very challenging 4-day workshops with the Watercolorist, Carol Carter, via Zoom. Before moving to DC, I took two Classical drawing courses at Teaching Studios of Art with Devin Cecil Wishing, Oyster Bay, NY and a Watercolors class for the first time, with Bill Graf at The Atelier at Flowerfield, Long Island, NY. During my Architectural studies and work experience, classical architectural drawings and sketching drawings courses were part of my curriculum. (Samples of Maria's painting below.)

SUNSHINE CLUB In this festive season, we sometimes forget those who will experience loneliness or sadness, particularly with the Covid pandemic keeping families apart.
I feel fortunate to belong to an art club which is a caring community and to that end the
Sunshine Club continues in an attempt to show support to members going through trying times, whether through illness or loss. By sending them a card from Annapolis Watercolor Club, we hope to bring a little light into their lives.
If you are aware of a member experiencing serious illness or close bereavement (whether human or pet), please contact me with their:
Name, email, phone number and the reason for the card.
At present, due to the pandemic, we are using the Jacquie Lawson website to send virtual cards.
Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season
Through creativity may we experience renewal,
